    Data Fields

What Does a WHOIS Lookup Tell You?

A WHOIS lookup retrieves live registration data directly from the authoritative registry for that domain's TLD.

    Registrar

The accredited registrar the domain is registered through (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, HostRainbow).

    Registration & Expiry Dates

When the domain was first registered and when it is due for renewal — useful for monitoring competitor domains.

    Name Servers

The authoritative DNS servers controlling where the domain's records are hosted.

    Domain Status

Flags such as clientTransferProhibited, renewPeriod, and redemptionPeriod that indicate the domain's lifecycle state.

    Registrant Organisation

The organisation name of the domain owner, when not hidden by a privacy proxy (post-GDPR most personal data is masked).

    Last Updated

When the registration record was last modified — useful for spotting recent transfers or renewals.

    WHOIS Lookup FAQ

Common questions about domain WHOIS lookups.

WHOIS is a long-established standard for querying domain registration data. When you look up a domain, you see the registrar, registration and expiry dates, name servers, status flags, and the registrant organisation (or their privacy proxy). This tool fetches that data live from the authoritative registry for the domain's TLD.

Since GDPR came into effect in 2018, most registrars replaced personal registrant data (name, address, email) with privacy-proxy details. Organisation names are still shown when registrants are businesses. This protects domain owners from spam and data harvesting.

Some country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) do not yet publish their registration data through the global lookup network. If your TLD isn't covered, the lookup returns no data. Most generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, etc.) and many ccTLDs are fully supported.

Data is fetched live from the authoritative domain registry at the time of lookup. Results are cached in your browser for 10 minutes, so very recent changes — like a new registration or renewal — may take up to 10 minutes to appear.

This tool is domain-specific. IP addresses and ASN lookups are not supported. For IP WHOIS, query the relevant Regional Internet Registry (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, etc.) directly.
